Access to Information on the Environment

Members of the public have the right to obtain environmental information from the Commission for Aviation Regulation (Commission) under - European Communities (Access to Information on the Environment) Regulations, 2007-2018 - referred to as “AIE Regulations”. The AIE Regulations legislation sets out the procedures for public access to information relating to the environment held by public bodies.

All the requests under the AIE legislation must be made in writing to the Data Protection and Corporate Services Officer, Commission for Aviation Regulation, 6 Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2, Ireland. Email:

The request made by members of public via email/letter should mention the following:

  1. Must state that the request is made under the AIE legislation.
  2. Clearly specify what information they are seeking.
  3. Personal data including name and contact details.

The Commission will review and respond to the request within one month from the date of receiving it. There is no initial fee for making an AIE request. However, the Commission may charge a reasonable fee for supplying the information required, including photocopying and printing fees and postage fees.

Scale of fees:

  • Photocopying/printing - €0.05 per page
  • Information supplied electronically - free of charge
  • Postage - at actual cost

Disclaimer: Please be advised that Public bodies may refuse AIE requests on certain mandatory grounds (personal information/third party information) or discretionary grounds (commercial confidentiality etc) outlined in the AIE legislation.

Appeals: Members of the public have the right to appeal a decision of the Commission by submitting a written request for an internal review of the decision. The review requests should be submitted to the contact person and address given above.

Members of the public who are unsatisfied with the decision of the internal review can file a complaint or appeal the decision again by contacting the Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Information (“OCEI”). The complaint or an appeal to OCEI must be made within one month from receipt of the reviewed decision from the Commission.
